About The Emblem:

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award: Initiated in 1977 by the Harrisburg Diocese, this award will be paid for by the parish or sponsoring organization and is at a parish event or happening such as a family gathering or special liturgy that will appropriately honor the individual. The applicant should have at least three years of adult service. This is an annual award.

The National St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award: Initiated in 1979 by the Department of Education, USCC, recognizes the meritorious contributions of adults who serve Catholic youth through girls/boys organizations. This medal affirms the work of those who help youth develop their spiritual lives within the context of girls/boys organizations. It will ordinarily be received before the St. Ann Medal is earned. The applicant should have at least ten years of adult service.

The National St. Anne Award: Initiated nationally by the Department of Education, USCC, this is a national recognition for adults who serve Catholic youth through girls/boys organizations. The award was inaugurated in 1957 and redesigned in 1980. The applicant should have at least 3 years of adult service.

Who is Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton?

Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was a wife, mother, widow, convert to Catholicism, foundress of the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph, and is now a canonized saint. After being left widowed with 5 young children at the age of 29, she was befriended by the Filicchi family where she became aquainted with Catholicism. After she converted to the faith, she established a school for girls in Baltimore and then founded the Sisters of Charity who joined in the ministry of education for girls and women. It is because of her work for education and girls that her name is invoked in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton award.

This award is given under the auspices of the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding contributions to the growth and development of young women in the Girl Scouts of America and the Camp Fire Association. This medal is not an award to be earned, but rather an honor one is nominated for by others. As such, all nominations should be made confidentially to the selection committee of the Diocese of Knoxville Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Award Ceremony:

The emblem will be presented to adults at a formal ceremony or Mass. The location may vary from year to year. Each scout will be given their emblem by the Bishop or his representative at a ceremony or during Mass.
